Sisters Launch Comedy Sci-fi Series with Puppets‏

Protesters line the sidewalks on Wall Street in New York, decrying corporate greed. Occupy Chicago shut down the city’s Loop area. Angry customers yanked their investments out of Bank of America in outrage at a $5 monthly fee, which was swiftly reversed.

Average work-a-day Americans are fed up with corporate shenanigans and frustrated with unemployment numbers. Enter a Web series meant to inject levity, and even inspiration, into an increasingly ugly situation: “Human Resources.” This 11-part Web series – think “X Files” meets “Office Space” at “Sesame Street”– is the work of siblings and Chicagoans, Kozi Kyles and Kyra Kyles, co-founders of Myth Lab Entertainment, Inc. A new episode will hit www.hrtheseries.com every Wednesday starting November 16, 2011.

Nearly a decade ago, the sisters decided to write up a concept Kozi dreamed up as a frightened spectator to a series of layoffs at a former employer. Wondering at workers who were seemingly called away and never returned, Kozi mused that there was something sinister, even supernatural, going on in the company’s HR offices.

“We’ve written several scripts, but this one would have required a robust budget because of the special effects involved,” said Kozi Kyles—who has a background in film and marketing.

“We tabled it to look for ways to fund it,” Kyra said. “But it was always in the backdrop.”

Fast forward to 2009. The bleak economy and jobless outlook drew the sisters back to their original script. Kozi and Kyra re-imagined it as a Web series starring puppets. They hoped their felt-covered stars – including a cold CEO and laid-off family man– would take some of the sting out of real issues in the plot: layoffs, corporate secrecy, and the underemployed.

An early fan of the series was Lil Rel, a finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” show. The Chicago native clocked in some hours providing side-splitting recaps of each episode. The overall result is humorous, but hopefully offers inspiration, both to viewers and entrepreneurs.

“We were able to dive in and make this series having no puppet experience and using our own money,” Kyra Kyles—a Chicago-based writer and TV personality—said of the sisters’ recruitment of local talent from Redmoon Theatre, iO Chicago Theater, Second City, School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College Chicago.

“Despite the challenges, it has been empowering to pursue our dreams of launching this series,” Kozi Kyles said.

P. Scott

By Tamara Jenkins

A contemporary artist with a style ahead of its time, New York native P. Scott has created his own course in the art world. Fusing art and fashion together on fabrics, including denim, Scott has brought together his loves as well as created a signature style he calls “fashionism”.  His talent exceeds beyond art as an established barber and aspiring fashion designer.

His latest exhibit, Vision of a Fashion God, features a Polo Christ, a Gucci Buddha, a Ganesh Ferragamo and an Apollo Versace.  Recently, UnRated Urban got a chance to speak with Scott during the second opening of his exhibit.

When did you know you had a gift for art and/or knew you wanted to be an artist

I really realized that I was an artist and had talents or skills was when I did a project for my art teacher. I duplicated this piece but did it in my own signature way; I did it with colored pencils. It was some gold fish in a glass bowl and it had this really ill checked board type pattern to it. When I did it, I realized I really have skills and this is not just a hobby.

My teacher realized the same thing and he took my piece and never gave it back to me. He said it was plagiarism. I was a young boy and was like what, I’m just trying to learn how to draw. I’m pretty sure he has it to this day waiting for me to become famous.Yeah, it was that good, I think he wanted to keep it for his house or something. I knew then that I had skills.

When I was 11 years old cutting hair, I knew I had some skills with cutting hair, but at that point I  really that sharp in terms of cutting so at that age it was just designs, I didn’t fade, I didn’t have any blends going on, nothing, it was just a line, some designs and there you have it. It wasn’t that good of a haircut, it was more like hair art and then eventually I learned how to do tapers and fades. I guess you could say I initially started off as a hair artist.

Everything to me is like art. When I do hair, it’s a form of art, when I draw and art, obviously that’s a form of art, when I design clothes, that’s a form of art. It is categorized but I choose not to categorize , I choose to put it in one big bowl and call it art.

How would you describe your style

It’s hard to put my style in a box only because I touch on a lot of different styles. I guess you could say expressionistic, contemporary, a little pop, but in all honesty I try to look at my work, I want to coin the phrase Fashionism because my art is heavily intertwined and fused with fashion. Its art meets fashion on all different levels, visually I show you my artistic capabilities with drawing and painting or pastels, ink whatever but I do it on exotic fabrics and that’s how I kind of merge the two and also through subject matter.Somewhere within the piece you’ll see something that references fashion. So that’s why I was like eventually I’ll coin the phrase and call it Fashionism, maybe eventually they will be like there’s a whole other genre of art.

Do you think the cities you’ve lived in (New York, Philadelphia and now Chicago) have affected your art

Yes, definitely. I’m from New York so, I say this all the time, it’s ironic that as an artist I was always trying to find a niche, I was always trying to find something that suits me or that would be unique and people would recognize that as signature style.

I was always searching outside of what was really what I did, which was, since I was a kid, I’ve always painted on different clothes, I’ve always painted on different shoes or whatever it was, it was always somehow related to fashion because in New York back in the day, there was a lot of graffiti done on jeans, denim jackets, everything and then sneaker art became real heavy in New York, so I opened a boutique in New York and I was doing a lot of sneaker art and a lot of custom stuff. But it’s always been that I’ve painted on appeal.

Why did you come to Chicago

I moved to Chicago because I had a business offer. I do the buying for a few stores in New York and here (Chicago) now but at the time I was just doing the buying for the stores in New York. My partner made me a business proposition, he was like you come help me with the two stores in Chicago, help me with the décor, because I’m pretty good at interior design as well, and in turn we’ll get the clothing line going. So I came out here and I was only supposed to be out here for maybe six months at the most and it ended up turning into five years.I ended up managing a few of the stores for a couple of years, but I was like this isn’t why I’m here so I just fell back and started working on the line, which is in the pre-production stage.

Explain this exhibit, Visions of a Fashion God

I found my lane with fusing art and fashion together with the different fabrics, so I was like what can I do that will be provocative, thought provoking and draw people into an exhibit. I came up with the idea of the name and once I came up with the name, I was like that’s controversial, that’s something will draw people in and then I started to figure out what my subject matter would be from there so I conceptualized the exhibit’s name and I went from there.

I did the Gucci Buddha and then I was looking at it and thought I need to do something crazy to it, it looks good but I’m not feeling it all the way so I came up with the idea to put mind, body, and soul, cross the soul out and put fashion. And the colors kind of go with the Gucci, so I added the Gucci, put it in the eyes and added the colors and then from there the whole idea just got birthed and I was like, you know what, Vision of a Fashion God– that’s the name of the exhibit, I’m shooting to do it during Fashion Week so it all coincides and I just ran with it. The initial opening was during the closing of Fashion Week in Chicago, it all kind of fell into place and I just ran with it.

Do you have a favorite piece

From this show I would say the Gucci Buddha the most because I like the posture of the head, I like the way it looks in terms of it draws you in, I like the technique that I used and the concept, it’s the one that triggered the whole series. In a sense it’s the Vision of a Fashion God. I like the Polo Christ too.

One of your inspirations is Jean-Michel Basquiat? Do you have any others

Yes, Salvador Dali, Van Gogh, I like Monet as well. Those three are very influential on my paint style and how I approach art because I was fascinated with their work. And there are a few newer artists that I like one is from Canada and he moved to New York and does portraits and graffiti type stuff; and Hebru Brantley.

Do you have any upcoming projects

Yes, I’m going to give myself about a month’s rest and then I’m right back at it again.I’m shooting for my next show to be in the spring. Venue, not sure yet, we’re working on that but definitely except to see another show in the spring, either March or April.

A final public reception for the exhibit will be held on Monday, November 21 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Lacuna Artist Lofts & Studios, 2150 S. Canalport, Suite 5C-14, Chicago, IL. For more information on Scott, please visit www.pscottart.com.

What Your Husband Don’t Know, Can Get Someone Killed

By Wendy Simmons

Every once and a while you come across a story about adultery that makes you feel for the adulterer and not condemn them. This is one of those times.

Stage play put to DVD “What Your Husband Doesn’t Know” engages us in the life of a loved and loving housewife, whose successful husband reluctantly neglects her. Not only is quality time put on the back burner but sexual interactions are also strained; so when a young attractive man begins working in her home, sparks fly and she is now tangled in a web of deceit that she can only hope to end before she ruins the perfect life that she and her husband built.

Lea, played by singer Michelle Williams, is married to Franklin, played by Amen’s Clifton Davis. Lea knows that Franklin has good intentions but the lack of affection and time pushes Lea into the arms of Paul, played by Brian White. With the guidance of her mother, Lea decides to end things with Paul; however his feelings quickly turned into an obsession. Lea has to now figure out how to stop Paul’s relentless approaches while trying to rekindle the flame that she and husband had throughout most of their marriage.

Lea confesses to her Pastor about the affair and ultimately her being forced to defend herself against Paul. While she narrates, we get the back-story of how a wife’s feelings of neglect can lead to a disastrous and possibly murderous ending.

This play, which was written directed and produced by David E. Talbert, wraps us into the drama of Lea’s life while allowing us to feel for her. I found this production to be very entertaining and captivating. I longed to see how Lea would be able to juggle a stalker and a loving husband.

There were a few musical numbers that I felt were not needed but it helped to showcase the talents of the cast. It’s not all drama through the play…Lea’s best friend and live-in house guest provides plenty of comic relief. There’s also a twist that helps to tie up some loose ends and give validity to Lea’s mother’s adamant advice on ending the affair.

This desperate housewife turned fatal attraction will keep you glued to see how a wife gets out of a terrifying situation. Pick this DVD up and question what you would do in that situation.

I give it $$$

DVD will be available for purchase on November 1st exclusively at http://www.davidetalbert.com

In Late July 2011, Billy Danze took to Conspiracy  Worldwide Radio to break the news that M.O.P.’s upcoming LP would be a  collaborative effort with German & Danish production team, the Snowgoons.  Speaking on the album, Danze said, “[Snowgoons] just sent us some fire…those  dudes are incredible…when you hear this project, you’re going to be satisfied as  an M.O.P. fan and a Snowgoons fan.” Ensuring fans around the world that this  will be one of their most diverse sounding albums, the Mash Out Posse member  went on to praise the Snowgoons, proclaiming, “they’ve got everything…they’re  blazing through and coming from different angles. These guys providing us with  that dramatic sound, with those theatrical sounds, with that hard hip-hop…they  supplied us with everything. I’m really psyched about this project.” Further,  listeners can pr

Big Pooh Dirty Pretty Things Coming November 1

Rapper Big Pooh is excited to announce the upcoming release of his new album, Dirty Pretty Things. Serving as the second official solo album from the now-solo emcee, Dirty Pretty Things will be released November 1st via Big Pooh’s newly formed label, For Members Only.

In 2005, Big Pooh first stepped outside of the Little Brother umbrella, releasing his debut solo album, Sleepers. Since then, the fan favorite group released a handful of highly regarded albums before finally disbanding last year, and so, as Big Pooh sat down to begin crafting Dirty Pretty Things, with his career as part of Little Brother was coming to a close, he found inspiration in a movie that he felt mirrored his own journey through music. “I always thought Dirty Pretty Things was a really dope movie,” remarks Pooh. “But it was overlooked for whatever reasons, the same way I’ve been overlooked as a solo artist.”

It makes sense, then, that an album intent on proving, once and for all, that Pooh can stand alone as a solo artist would also serve as some of the rapper’s most personal work to date. “This album is me; it allowed me to give listeners a piece of my soul and reveal a lot of what I’ve been dealing with over the past couple years,” explains Pooh. “Dirty Pretty Things is about looking past outside appearance and finding out what’s really going on inside. It’s about the truth.”

Joining Pooh for Dirty Pretty Things is an impressive cast of producers and rappers, but more than that, they’re artists that Pooh felt best complemented his own vision. “I decided who to work with based on feel,” explains Pooh, who enlisted the production efforts of Nottz, DJ Khalil, Focus… , and more, while Torae, Joe Scudda, Carlitta Durand, Darien Brockington, and others lent vocals. “I’m not into forcing music,” notes Pooh. “Everyone was chosen based on how I felt they would fit the puzzle I put together.”

One of those puzzle pieces was Family Biz, Ent., who lent their touch to “Medicine Man,” released as the first song and video from the album. Joining that track are a handful of other personal favorites of Pooh. “Free,” for example, is a track about learning how to be comfortable in your own skin. “Are You Ready,” featuring Torae and produced by Nottz, is another standout, as is “Real Love,” produced by Focus…. “‘Real Love’ is about the current relationship I have with my brother,” explains Pooh, and the song is just another example of how Pooh’s most personal work has translated into his strongest. “All of the personal and professional anguish led up to this moment,” says Pooh. “Dirty Pretty Things marks my progression as a man, my progression as a businessman, and, most of all, my progression as an artist.”
