Reeling 2011: The Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival

Wish Me Away

REELING 2011: The Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary as the second-oldest LGBT film festival in the world, showcasing innovative gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender films from around the world. This year, films are featured at six different Chicago area theaters. The festival runs Thursday, November 3 through Saturday, November 12, 2011.

Reeling is proud to kick off ten days of exceptional filmmaking with our Opening Night selection, The Wise Kids by Stephen Cone, marking the first time the festival opens with a film directed by a Chicago-based filmmaker. This critically acclaimed, coming-of-age drama follows three teenagers from a religious community in South Carolina who are in the transitional space between high school and college, when life seems to be all questions and no answers, and the future is scarily wide open. Featuring a “brilliant cast of young actors” (Variety), the film won Outfest’s Grand Jury Awards for Best US Dramatic Feature and Outstanding Screenwriting; Newfest’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Film; and Sidewalk/Shout Birmingham’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.

The Wise Kids screens on November 3 at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Avenue. Closing the festival is the wildly funny satire, Going Down in La-La Land, by award-winning director/writer and festival favorite, Casper Andreas (Violet Tendencies, The Big Gay Musical). A sexy and uncensored depiction of what an aspiring actor can – and will – do to make it in Hollywood, Going Down in La-La Land screens on Saturday, November 12, at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Reeling is also proud to present three Documentary Centerpiece films: We Were Here, Wish Me Away, and Vito. Congruent with Reeling’s 30th anniversary, 2011 also marks 30 years since AIDS was first reported. In the documentary We Were Here, filmmaker David Weissman revisits the generation whose lives were affected in unimaginable ways when their beloved city of San Francisco changed from a hotbed of sexual freedom to the epicenter of the “gay plague.”

In the intimate and moving Wish Me Away, filmmakers Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf follow country music superstar Chely Wright’s journey as she finds the strength to reveal she is gay to friends, family, and eventually, the public. The film won the Los Angeles Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature and Frameline’s Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary. Vito is Jeffrey Schwarz’s heartfelt portrait of Vito Russo, well-known cinephile and author of The Celluloid Closet, and one of the earliest and important voices in the struggle for gay rights. Screenings for the festival take place at Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema (2828 N. Clark St.), Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave.), Chicago Filmmakers (5243 N. Clark St.), Instituto

Cervantes (31 W. Ohio St.), the Block Cinema at the Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art (40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston), and the Portage Theater (4050 N. Milwaukee Avenue).

The mission of Reeling is to recognize the important artistic and socially relevant contributions LGBT filmmakers have made to our culture and to counteract stereotyping with valid, meaningful, and diverse portrayals of LGBT people. For more information visit: www.reelingfilmfestival.org.

“Love & Hip Hop” Season 2 – Premieres Monday, November 14

VH1’s hit docu-soap series Love & Hip Hop returns for its second season, picking up where the first season left off, following the lives of six vibrant women, each with a link to the exciting, glamorous and high-stress world of hip hop.

The leader of the pack is Chrissy Lampkin , long time girlfriend of superstar rapper Jim Jones.  Last season Chrissy made a bold move and proposed to Jim.  This season, she’s still waiting for that wedding.  Maybe it’s Jim’s fear of commitment or maybe it’s Chrissy’s tense relationship with Jim’s mom Nancy – either way, Chrissy has made it clear that she’s not willing to wait much longer.  At the end of season one, Olivia Longott had finally stepped out of from the shadows of her old crew, 50 Cent’s G-Unit, and released a new single, “December.”  But after some initial buzz, Olivia is back where she started; hustling harder than ever to launch a solo career and get signed by a major label.  Last season, celebrity stylist, Emily Bustamante tried desperately to get a real commitment from her son’s father, rap star Fabolous.  Unwilling to live in the shadows any longer, she has finally decided to move out on her own and start a Fab-u-less new life.  Somaya Reece, the Latina Bombshell who made her entrance last season is back again, with killer curves and a fierce commitment to do whatever it takes to launch her rap career.

Two new faces joining the group are Kimberly “Kimbella” Vanderhee and Yandy Smith . New to the Love & Hip Hop” franchise, Kimbella is a sexy bi-racial model ready to try her luck at the pop music game.  She’s linked to the group by Dipset crew member and rapper Juelz Santana, with whom she shares a son, but fitting in with the other women may prove difficult. Yandy Smith , long time manager of rapper Jim Jones, is an entertainment powerhouse, having worked with big names such as Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Cameron to name a few.  In addition to being friends with both Chrissy and Kimbella, she’s also the glue that holds the Dipset crew together.

This one-hour, 10 episode series will follow these six women as they navigate their professional and love lives in a world where opportunity, fame, excitement and money is always in sight … but sometimes just out of reach.

Viewers can catch sneak peeks of the premiere episodes for each series on VH1.com the week before they premiere on air. Subsequent episodes will be available on VH1.com after they air. Additional video content from each series including bonus scenes and exclusive extras from each episode will be available on VH1.com and on VH1 Mobile throughout the season.

Vote Yes for Love?

By Wendy Simmons

What happens when two opposing political sides meet in a fiery battle? Fireworks commence. And that’s exactly what happens when pro-Obama Aretha meets the unlikely pro-McCain Kyle in the romantic comedy Politics of Love

Aretha, played by Bollywood star Mallika Sherawat, is Indian- American, raised by her biological Indian father and African American step mother, played by Loretta Devine. She grew up having to love and embrace both cultures; which can be an conflict when mom and dad can’t even agree on much of anything. After returning home from a failed career in New York, Aretha is convinced to work for the 2008 Obama election. That career change leads her to meet Kyle, played by Brian White. He’s her counterpart in the McCain camp and they’re both very passionate about their candidates, and other things as well. Kyle and Aretha’s attraction to one another is undeniable, but will it work? Can too sides of the aisle put aside their differences in order to let love blossom? That’s what director William Dear is trying to allow us to witness.

A wonderful cast makes up this romp of a comedy. Devine is accompanied by Ruby Dee and Gerry Bednob, making this film rich with acting history. The chemistry between the main two characters was very realistic.
But although the performances were enjoyable the silly antics caused this fairly smart comedy to appear immature . It’s a great concept and a wonderful way to relive a very historical moment in our country but the predictable plot was a little disappointing.

Perhaps, you can rent this one on DVD for date night.

I give it $$

Spike Lee is among the feature’s executive producers. At Sundance, cinematographer Bradford Young was honored with the [U.S. Dramatic Competition] Excellence in Cinematography Award.

Adepero Oduye, who had earlier starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronouncedah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school.

Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with.

Rapper TYGA Mentors Chicago’s Youth

Grammy-nominated pop/rap artist TYGA, also known as Michael Stevenson, came to Chicago last month to empower under-privileged and economically challenged youth as part of his R.O.A.R (Reach Out And Represent) Youth Empowerment Campaign.

On September 23, 2011, TYGA came to Bogan High School as part of the La Belle Vie foundation BULU (Be U Love U) program. He spoke with over 500 youth in each city and present VIP packages to select youth who are nominated by the staff for meeting criteria in three critical areas; attendance, grades and behaviour.

TYGA, an acronym for Thank You God Always, is an American rapper whose album No Introduction debuted in 2008. He has worked with Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. He received much acclaim for his Grammy-nominated song with Chris Brown, Deuces, and hit song Coconut Juice, featuring his cousin Travis from Gym Class Heroes. TYGA is now receiving acclaim and admiration for his R.O.A.R youth empowerment campaign, which provides a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity to under-privileged youth.

Developed and supported by the La Belle Vie Foundation, the collaborative BULU/ R.O.A.R. Campaign, is designed to acknowledge and eradicate the damaging impact that media, violence, drug involvement, poor decision-making skills and a lack of education impose on the self-esteems of young people and ultimately their futures.

BULU’s goal is to celebrate youth and achievement by bringing notable successful personalities from similar backgrounds to youth via motivational speaking, providing a tangible mentoring, leadership and empowerment component.

TYGA is thrilled to partner again with Chris Brown before the launch of their highly anticipated F.A.M.E tour with Kelly Roland and T-Pain that started on September 12, 2011 in Toronto. The tour will hit 28 U.S. cities.

During the F.A.M.E. tour, R.O.A.R. and BULU will select a school in each of the 28 tour cities – – engaging at least 2000 youth per city in schools and over 7 million fans per city via his social media platforms.

During the assembly, TYGA gave students the unadulterated truth about the focus and determination that it really takes to accomplish their goals, as well as address the importance of education, anti-drug, anti- violence and achievement despite the challenges.

In an attempt to offset the high drop rates among Black and Latino students and to bring attention to the importance of going to college, TYGA is sponsoring 15 “TYGA SCHOLARS” in each city where a R.O.A.R event is scheduled in a high school. TYGA SCHOLARS will be senior high school students who have been selected by their school administrators to complete the EDU, Inc. COMMON BLACK COLLEGE APPLICATION “for free”. The EDU, Inc. The application allows students to apply to 35 HBCUs at the same time. The use of the EDU, Inc. Application increases the educational options of students by allowing them to receive acceptance letters, financial aid packages and scholarship offers from several different colleges.

TYGA’s programs R.O.A.R., in partnership with BULU exemplifies a commitment to making a difference in the lives of under-privileged and economically challenged youth through education, mentoring and empowerment. To date, BULU has serviced over 10,000 youth nationwide.

Naturi Naughton Discusses The Playboy Club

By Toyin Alaka

Playboy has been an institution in American culture since its inception in 1953. With a loyal legion of fans, the company followed up in 1960 with its next venture, the Playboy Club. This week (September 19), NBC is taking viewers back to the time of the satin bodices, fluffy tails and satin headbands with ears with its new series The Playboy Club.

This past May UnRated Urban got the chance to talk to actress Naturi Naughton who will be featured in the series as Bunny Brenda. Naughton is best known as a former member of the R&B group 3LW and for her portrayal of rapper Lil Kim in the bio-pic Notorious, based on the life and death of rapper The Notorious B.I.G.

UUM: So I understand that you are in the upcoming Playboy Club series, can you tell me a little bit about it?

Naughton: Yes, we started shooting in March and I will be coming back in July to finish it up, it will air on NBC on Monday nights and I’m so excited because I play one of the few African American playboy bunnies and it’s in 1963.

UUM: That’s awesome and so great for you!

Naughton: I think it’s going to be really special, this show is going to take people back to when the playboy club first started in 1963 as well as other things going on like the civil rights movement, the feminist movement and so many things that the show is going to make people more aware of.

UUM: Tell us a little bit about your role in this series and what it’s like to be an African American woman who is a bunny back then?

Naughton: I play Bunny Brenda, a young ambitious, sassy girl who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. My character is a fighter who if the world tells her that something is not possible, she believes that it’s possible.  It’s hard being a bunny period, however if you are an African American woman in the 60’s you have more challenges to overcome and I think I channeled in on some of those challenges.  Going back and talking to some of the women who were original playboy bunnies made me realize that they just worked extra hard and were very confident and they were able to get to where they are today.  At the end of the day it’s about being a woman who knows what she wants and I believe we can all achieve that.

UUM: We are so happy for you and with how your career is taking off so nicely

Naughton: I feel blessed with opportunities to get to this point, from playing Lil Kim in Notorious to Fame and Lottery Ticket and now I’m one of the lead roles on a prime time NBC show The Playboy Club. So I feel really honored & I’m excited.

UUM: That’s great, how are you enjoying Chicago?

Naughton: I love Chicago, even though it’s the windy city and it’s cold and it’s raining tonight actually.  However, it’s such a great city with a beautiful skyline and when I go out and attend different things and I see the amazing culture and atmosphere of the city I feel at home and I love Chicago!  I can’t wait to come back and resume shooting.

VH1 Follows Multi-Platinum Rapper T.I. in New Series

VH1 is teaming up with multi-platinum recording artist rapper T.I. as he re-adjusts to life as a free man after being incarcerated for nearly a year in a Federal prison in Arkansas.  In the new untitled T.I. series premiering December 5 at 10 p.m.*, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at the most private and personal moments of one of today’s hottest, most sought after Grammy winning artists as he is reunited with his wife and kids and thrust back into society at this crucial juncture in his life.

The half hour 10-episode series follows the “King of the South” at his most vulnerable state, as he is released from an 11 month Federal prison term, his second stint in three years.  Along the way we will see T.I. re-acclimate back into his life as a father, husband, son and friend, as well as a musician, a clothier, a businessman, and an actor (he last starred in and produced Sony’s film TAKERS which opened number one at the box office the weekend prior to his arrest).  We will also witness T.I. behind the scenes in studio as he goes about recording yet another likely Grammy-award winning album.  All the while with T.I. needing to abide by a new set of restrictions and obstacles due to his probation terms.  Can the King stay on the straight and narrow while juggling the chaos of his kingdom?

Viewers will also get a glimpse into the very loving and always fascinating relationship between T.I. and his wife Tameka (aka “Tiny”), who has faithfully stood by T.I.’s side through it all and who herself was a former member of 90’s Grammy winning pop group Xscape.  Tameka and T.I. are passionately in love, but both know that this previous incarceration has to be his last.  The mother of two of T.I.’s children, along with her own fifteen-year-old daughter, Tameka was forced to hold down the fort while T.I. was behind bars.  Viewers will also be introduced to the OMG GIRLZ, a sizzling new up-and-coming pop group that Tameka manages.  With T.I. back on his throne, we will watch as he reclaims his kingdom, rebuilds his businesses, and reconnects with his family and friends.  Most importantly though, we will see T.I. adjusting to life with a new set of rules, so as to never again repeat the devastating mistakes of his past.
