“12 Years a Slave” Director Steve McQueen, And Actress Lupita Nyong’o To Be Honored At The Hollywood Film Awards

lupita-steve-mcqueenCarlos de Abreu, founder and executive producer of the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards, announce that Fox Searchlight’s “12 Years a Slave” director, Steve McQueen will be honored with the “Hollywood Breakout Director Award,” and actress Lupita Nyong’o will receive the “New Hollywood Award” for her great performance. Steve McQueen is a British artist and filmmaker. In 2008, McQueen’s critically acclaimed first feature HUNGER won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival among countless other international prizes.  He followed with 2011’s incendiary film experience, SHAME, a provocative drama about addiction and secrecy in the modern world.   The film received numerous accolades and awards with McQueen winning the CinemAvvenire Award and FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival as well as nominations from BAFTA, the British Independent Film Awards, the London Film Festival, Evening Standard British Film Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards.

In 1996, McQueen was the recipient of an ICA Futures Award, in 1998 he won a DAAD artist’s scholarship to Berlin and in 1999 – besides exhibiting at the ICA and at the Kunsthalle in Zürich – he also won the Turner Prize.  McQueen has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Documenta (2002 and 2007) and at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 where he represented Britain.  His work is held in museum collections around the world including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou.

In 2003, he was appointed Official War Artist for the Iraq war by the Imperial War Museum and subsequently produced the poignant and controversial project Queen and Country, which commemorated the deaths of British soldiers who died in the Iraq War by presenting their portraits as a sheet of stamps.  In 2002, he was awarded the OBE and the CBE in 2011.

Born in London in 1969, McQueen lives and works in Amsterdam and London.

This winter, Lupita Nyong’o will co-star alongside Liam Neeson, Michelle Dockery and Julianne Moore in the thriller NON-STOP. This film is slated for a February 28, 2014 release by Universal Pictures.

The documentary follows eight individual Kenyans who have one thing in common: they were born with albinism, a genetic condition that causes a lack of pigmentation. In many parts of Africa, including Kenya, it is a condition that marginalizes, stigmatizes, and even endangers those who have it. Though highly visible in a society that is predominantly black, the reality of living with albinism is invisible to most. Through her intimate portraits, Nyong’o enables us see their challenges, humanity, and everyday triumphs.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama’s acting program, Nyong’o’s stage credits include playing ‘Perdita’ in The Winter’s Tale (Yale Repertory Theater), ‘Sonya’ in Uncle Vanya, ‘Katherine’ in The Taming of the Shrew, as well as being in the original production of Michael Mitnick’s Elijah.

12 YEARS A SLAVE has won over audiences and critics alike at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals, as well as received the “People’s Choice Audience Award” at Toronto this year. The film is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom.  In the pre-Civil War United States,Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.  Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.  In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.

Madonna Announces Art For Freedom Grants Program

MaddonaMadonna has announced a grants program in coordination with Art For Freedom, the global digital initiative designed to fuel free speech, to address, respond and protest persecution around the world.

Madonna kicked off Art For Freedom on September 24, 2013 by posting Secretprojectrevolution, a 17-minute video she created with Steven Klein.  The film – ‘a call to action’ – originally premiered on Vice and remains downloadable on Bit Torrent. Artists are encouraged to submit their own work on artforfreedom.com in the form of video, music, poetry or photography to express their personal meaning of freedom and revolution.

As part of the Art For Freedom initiative, Madonna has launched a grants program to support individuals and organizations working to advance social justice. Over the course of the next year she will select one artist each month whose creative expression helps fight oppression, intolerance and complacency. Madonna will award $10,000 to a nonprofit organization or project of the winning artist’s choice.  All projects must be focused on a social justice issue and exemplify the values of Art For Freedom.

Madonna will select the winning submission each month with the help of a guest curator beginning with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“I want to help give a creative voice to those who have been silenced and denied their human rights.  Art for Freedom is a platform that gives artists a chance to define freedom through their art. We have already received many incredible submissions. I am inviting all people to express their thoughts on the subject of freedom whether it’s describing specific persecution they have experienced, sharing how their rights have been violated and / or sharing their ideas creatively regarding fighting injustice,” commented Madonna.

Art For Freedom, launched in partnership with Vice, received over 1000 submissions in the first 48 hours of its inception. These submissions and the ones that follow will become part of the Art For Freedom platform and will be eligible for the Arts For Freedom grants program. Contributors can join the project by uploading original artwork at www.artforfreedom.com or tagging original posts #artforfreedom.

Pete Rock & Camp Lo Present ’80 Blocks From Tiffany’s Pt. II’

80blockscoverfinal (2)80 Blocks from Tiffany’s” is a project named after a popular documentary directed by Gary Weis in 1979 that reflected the days of early Bronx gang life. The project is solely produced by legendary producer Pete Rock and lyrically mastered by the Bronx Dynamite Duo Camp Lo; an together they form the group “80 Blocks from Tiffany’s”.

Pete Rock and Camp Lo keep Hip-Hop genuine with the “80 Blocks from Tiffany’s Pt. II” project. The venture started in 2008 after working on the underground hit “On Smash” for Styles P. This is when the trio decided to revive Hip-Hop’s heartbeat and pay tribute to the birthplace of the genre. The group’s initial release entitled, “80 Blocks from Tiffany’s,” was successfully launched in 2011 and used Pete Rock’s previous music catalog to set the tone for Camp Lo by providing authentic beats, with a distinctive soulful, jazzier style than what he is typically known for.

80 Blocks from Tiffany’s Part II” reintroduces the vintage art of sampling and soul of rap music that has made Hip-Hop commercially relevant, making this mixtape an instant classic. Never before has revered producer Pete Rock released free music, especially of this caliber. “80 Blocks from Tiffany’s Pt.  II” features all new original tracks from Pete Rock and as Pete states “teaming up with Camp Lo contributed to making the project authentic, explicit, and shocking.”

80 Blocks from Tiffany’s Pt. II” was released on 7-30-2013 exclusively by Datpiff.com and contains features from Mac Miller, Ab-Soul (TDE), Talib Kweli, Uncle Murda and M.O.P. All tracks were originally laid down at Pete Rock’s pre- production studio with engineer Dave Dar and mixed and mastered at Da Man Production Studio in NYC. The mixtape will be sonically superior than what currently exists in the mixtape market and combined with these features will reconfirm the revival of the 90’s boom-bap sound.
